I have pinched myself several times whilst writing this document. If you had told me 10 years ago that I would be defending the globe, I would not have been able to handle the immediate frustration that humanity would eventually become this dumb. The flat earth hypothesis would be nothing but a funny story, if it were not for the damage this dumb hypothesis is doing to Christianity.

The Case for a Biblical Flat Earth

Yes, Christians have attempted to make a case that the bible teaches a flat earth, and no the bible does not teach the earth is flat.

• Isaiah 40:22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in
• Isaiah 11:12 And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth

See, it says circle not globe! It says four corners? There aren’t corners on a globe!

Seriously, this is the entirety of their case. There have been many 5000 word papers written on this topic proving that these verses do not show the earth to be flat. We will show it here very simply and quickly,

The word circle in the Hebrew, word H2329 or חוּג means,

1. circle, circuit, compass
2. vault (of the heavens)

Why did the writers not use the Hebrew word for globe here? They did, this word חוּג pronounced “khoog” can represent circle and sphere. There is no basis to the case that חוּג means flat when referring to the planet!

The word corners in the Hebrew, word H3671 or כָּנָף means,

1. wing
2. extremity
3. skirt or corner of a garment

We are not talking about dresses here, the obvious interpretation to be selected in this verse is wing or extremity. This is no different from me saying that we should call all the people from the four corners of Australia into the middle for a meeting. This world does not represent a flat earth!

The Facts

Science is wonderful. Our creator gave us a universe that follows patterns and rules, and we have been able to make scientific laws based on these patterns and rules. Why does a subatomic particle spin at a certain rate? we have no idea. Why does the opposing particle always spin in the opposite direction? we have no idea. But we know they do, and we can measure their movements and make laws about their behavior that make predictions about their future. Gravitational time dilation, velocity time dilation, quantized galactic red shifts, general relativity, quantum mechanics are just some of the amazing facts about our universe that we have discovered and formed solid scientific laws about that allow us to make predictions with remarkable accuracy.

It is using the basic scientific method that we demolish the flat earth hypothesis in the very first round of discovery. It is for this reason that I shake my head in disbelief, what causes a growing number of people to believe in such nonsense that can be refuted with the most basic of the scientific method. The flat earth hypothesis does not qualify as a scientific theory, no one has constructed a robust flat earth theory that accurately describes what we see in reality, nor has anyone created a flat earth theory that can accurately make predictions about the future.

Many of our ancient ancestors worked out very early that the earth was a globe, and they did this somewhere between 384-322 B.C. using the scientific method. From this they were able to use the scientific method to make predictions about the size of the globe to a high degree of accuracy. What is remarkable is that this occurred some 2375 years ago!

Why do People Believe It?

There was once a time where I studied chemtrails. This is the proposition that the evil elites of this world are secretly poisoning us by flying large planes around and dumping large quantities of chemicals. I was open to believing this based on the following,

1. I was young and impressionable
2. I lacked education and knowledge
3. I was seeking truth whilst vulnerable
4. I did not have a Godly intellectual authority in my life
5. I had a disposition that led me to question authority

This was the perfect breeding ground for misinformation. Whilst I never was a solid believer of chemtrails, even the mere fact that I was open to them shows that the above situation is dangerous.

This is what breeds an environment for the flat earth, it is not facts or evidence based. For me I brought myself out of this errancy by study and persistence. I became a ruthless scientist, an avid proponent of truth and the scientific method, but it took far longer than it otherwise would have under the authority of a Godly intellect.

I have met Flat Earthers, and they all have one thing in common, they reject empirical evidence. There is nothing you can show them, no amount of evidence will change their minds. They lack education and knowledge, and because of this they all fail to tell the difference between truth and conspiracy.

Why does it Matter?

When Christians become proponents of this mess, they bring the integrity of God to question. The unsaved elites are constantly looking for ways to discredit Christ, and this dumb hypothesis allows them to place all Christians in the “dumb” basket.

• 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth

We are called to study, not just the bible, general study. The word “Study” in the greek G3718 or ὀρθοτομέω means,

1. to cut straight
2. to proceed on straight paths
3. equivalent to doing right
4. to make straight and smooth
5. to teach the truth, directly and correctly

We are commanded to study truth, and teach it directly and correctly. We are commanded to do this to be approved by God. God does not want uneducated unguided Christians walking around teaching this nonsense, they are neither approved by God nor free of shame when they do such things!

Conclusion

The concept of flat earth has no business being involved in Christianity. It is dangerous, it is not based on any evidence, it damages our mission to reach the lost and we should run from it as fast we possibly can.
